Good work requires research, discovery, user interviews, prototyping and more. Yet so much of the work done has a fixed release date assigned before the project begins. Why is that?
It takes a team to build a product. But to create a team requires trust, diversity, knowledge, experience and psychological safety. When these factors aren’t present success is difficult to achieve.
You need a process to ship your product. But when that process is a one-way street with major construction and no detours it can be challenging to make it to the destination and deliver value.
Success is dictated by knowing the customer, the market, the company, the competition, and the future. Starting out without this information is a warning sign that shouldn’t be ignored.

Instead, spending the hard effort to learn about the customer, the market, and then setting a strategy that pushes forward in a meaningful direction is needed. This takes time and can be difficult to do well, which is why many companies don’t do it.

It is amazingly easy to execute and never make a difference for customers. Taking what is there already and incrementally adding features without understanding the customer needs, wants, or outcomes is execution.
